Mike Leary President New Hampshire Sign Association
Nashua Land Use Revisions/Sign Ordinance Changes

Dear Mike,
Concerning the above mentioned matter, prior to the public hearing on May 22 at Nashua City Hall. I attended a meeting at the offices of the Nashua Telegraph which was attend by Nashua Telegraph staff as well as members of the Nashua Chamber of Commerce and various local business owners. We discussed the proposed land use document and it's impact to area business. I spoke of the negative impact on business's that will result from the unnecessary and arbitrary changes to the current zoning ordinance. Several of the participants spoke strongly of the danger of over regulation. We ended the meeting by agreeing to try every means to derail this legislation before it got to the public hearing stage.
On May 22 I attended a public meeting of city officials, planners, city consultants and the general public where the city planners, using visual aids made a comprehensive presentation of the proposed land use changes.
The Nashua mayor Bernie Streeter open the meeting by speaking to the commitee about his concerns that the whole plan needed some reworking and that the proposal had a long way to go before it was ready to present as a final draft. After the mayor spoke the planners made their presentation and spoke about some of the areas in the ordinance the had been changed to reflect recent input from the the business community and the public at large. The the chairman of the commitee opened up the discussion for public input, not as debate, but as testimoney. After several speakers I present my remarks as represnting the NHSA. I said the we in the sign industry viewed this kind of overregulation as having a chilling effect on the pro business climate that has existed in Nashua. I pointed out several areas where we were concerned that changes were being made arbitrarily and without attention to the real needs to properly advertise, direct and inform the public through the efficient use of signs.
